Interview
Why did you decide to start designing tees?
renn: I always had a fetish for well designed tees. After graduating, I started my own design company (Postmachina) with two partners and a startup (mynameise) that needed funding. We were able to get support for our startup and bootstrapped funding by doing commissioned assignments and shirts. And a after posting our first shirt we had so many cool feedback we have fans now which is great at conferences or presentations!
Where do you get your inspiration?
renn: Many things, I carry my Moleskine around wherever I go. I travel a lot and try to blend in with foreign culture as much as possible, which inspires me heavily. I've always been into clean, minimalist designs from the Bauhaus, DeStijl movements and modernist Japan, which I think is really visible in our work.
How quick of a designer are you?
renn: Coming up with cool concepts takes some time and iterations. I do a lot of sketches before I think things are perfect, especially when it comes to typography. After the concept phase, actual digital work usually doesn't take that long. Especially with print.
What is your favorite blog?
renn: I read a lot of RSS feeds, but amongst my favorite blogs are AisleOne.net, Gizmodo.com, Valleywag.com and theNextWeb.com.
Where do you buy your t-shirts?
renn: I get mine online from Threadless, www.Printliberation.com. But I love to visit designer districts in Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, Barcelona and Paris for great tees from obscure little shops.
Favorite movie of all time?
renn: 2001 would be too cheesy so I'd say... Garden State.
