Interview
Why did you decide to start designing tees?
RustyEight: I started designing out of necessity actually. I was right out of college and really planned on making a career in Website and MySpace design. So, I started contacting bands and found that along with MySpace profiles, shirt and logos were very much in demand. Also, being in a band myself, I was kind of the self appointed band designer, and we needed shirts. I had never really paid much attention to tee design previously, so I started looking up tee designers and gradually found my way to Emptees via GoMedia. From then on, I slowly started getting immersed in the culture. It drags you in haha.
Where do you get your inspiration?
RustyEight: From all over really. I can't really name one source that inspires me anymore. I used to go to GoMedia a lot when looking for inspiration, but I find myself doing that less and less lately. Mumford and GodMachine have being very influential, adding Brandon Heart, Nicolo Nimor and Alex Norman to that list as of lately. Then I can go to the opposite side of the scale too. I really enjoy the work of Greg Abbott and Dale Murray.
How quick of a designer are you?
RustyEight: It really depends on the subject matter. I usually have my work completed by the end of the week. The more detail needed in the piece, the longer it takes. I tend to be a perfectionist... I don't like giving work to a client I'm not 100% happy with.
What is your favorite blog?
RustyEight: I tend to read more blogs about the business end of the industry rather than design. I find myself at howtostartaclothingcompany a lot to get an insight on how others work their business. A new favorite is theartofapparel, again... more geared towards what other companies and artists are doing, rather than what they are designing. There is one blog I check out on occasion for design. I'm not even sure its considered a blog. Its made by the guys at WeAreSynapse, idrankyourtee. I just like the layout and feel... and I see things there I don't usually see on other traditional blog sites.
Favorite movie of all time?
RustyEight: It changes all the time, my current favorites are Six String Samurai (really cool indie film) and Zebraman (SubTitled Japanese 'Super Hero' movie)... but I'm usually the typical horror movie and fantasy movie nerd (Lord of the Rings, the Saw movies, 80s B-Side Horror). I don't get to watch movies as much as I would like. Hopefully that will change with the BluRay player and discs I won from Electric Zombie come in!
